In Search of The Holy Grail: One Girl’s Quest for The Perfect Mac ‘N Cheese Ends At Top Flr
Wednesday, February 10th, 2010What has always been my general love for food has lately morphed a more concentrated obsession. Not unlike Gawain seeking his Grail and armed with the passion of a religious zealot, I have searched far and wide for the best macaroni and cheese Atlanta has to offer.
Surprisingly, it wasn’t at some picnic-tabled barbecue dive, and neither was it at some million-star, million-dollar, rapper-owned hot spot. It turns out the place to go to get your mac’ on is also full of candle-lit nooks for getting macked on.
Owned by former DJ Jeff Meyers, Top Flr is a slender, white-brick, two-story building located on Myrtle Street. Though the parking lot is small, any trek after street parking will be well worth the small exertion once you walk in the door.
The downstairs is separated into two rooms, both with their own bars. The bar on the right provides an intimate, dimly lit setting, with just the right amount of shhh for conversations not to be overheard. Savor the live music alongside a dish from the organic menu on the other side of the restaurant. Upstairs relish your dining experience away from the bar crowds.
Obviously my ideal menu suggestion would involve ordering macaroni with a side of macaroni, but everyone serves a different god. Mine just happens to involve “sharp cheddar, smoked gouda, and a spicy panko crust.”
Other menu items to enjoy include Orange-Apple Tofu, a Duck-Confit Pizza, and a side of pistachio ice cream, forever a find, alongside the Flourless Chocolate Espresso Cake. And I haven’t even begun to cocktails.
With a drink menu consisting of house-made ingredients such as Apple-Rosemary Vodka, or their own own Spiced Rum, Top Flr’s “Fancy” or “Stetson Boots” will ensure your date’s lovely boots won’t soon be walking out the door.
Though a prime sweetheart spot, apt for its numerous alcoves both up and downstairs, Top Flr is also a great anytime hang for those young, hip, and out-and-about. Whether post-show, pre-game, post-shift, or just suffering from a mac ‘n cheese deficiency, find your niche to nest in at Top Flr.
