When Art has no Avenue, It Finds a Tunnel: A Look At the Krog Street Tunnel

When Art has no Avenue, It Finds a Tunnel: A Look At the Krog Street TunnelBy Summer Stanley. Whether you are heading to a metal show at Lenny’s or to the bottom of a pitcher at 97 Estoria, chances are you will pass through the Krog Street Tunnel. Intersecting Dekalb Avenue and Wylie Street, the graffiti-blanketed tunnel conjoins more than Cabbagetown and Inman Park. From the humblest tag – an artist’s signature, to intricate pieces – in the sense of slang for masterpieces – the tunnel is a cultural hub. Along with its 4 and ½ star ranking on yelp.com, the tunnel has that other factor which makes something a place: pathos.

Bella BellisimaBy Summer Stanley. Tucked away in the Virginia Highlands off of Monroe Street is a giant, bustling shopping center called Amsterdam Walk. Inside there are plenty of restaurants and bars to discover but there is one in particular where you will find the prettiest girls in all of Amsterdam, predominately cute girls who like

Best Books: The Atlanta Book Exchange

Best Books: The Atlanta Book ExchangeBy Summer Stanley. To borrow the words of Tennessee Williams, treasured American writer, the Atlanta Book Exchange is “a world within the world.” Located across from Manuel’s Tavern, near the intersection of North and North Highland Avenues, the newer location of this Atlanta fixture boasts more space but less foot traffic than the beloved cottage in Virginia Highlands. Admittedly there was

Thieves’ Final Show: A Look Back With Jessie Calmes, Meta Gary, Rene Lambert, and Khalilah Karim

Thieves’ Final Show: A Look Back With Jessie Calmes, Meta Gary, Rene Lambert, and Khalilah KarimBy Summer Stanley. Thieves’ final performance and CD release party was at Kavarna Coffee Shop in Oakhurst [editor: area in Atlanta, GA] on Friday, January 15, 2009. The all-girl group, comprised of Jessie Calmes on vocals and guitar, Meta Gary on violin and vocals, Rene Lambert on bass and mandolin, and Khalilah Karim on backup vocals and accordion have come a long way to develop their sound of lilting, poetic folk. Directly after the post-show cigarette break, I gathered the band for some giggle-ridden girl talk, where they recalled their worst show ever, performing with the legendary Desk Ark, as well as a possible comeback.

Even Hipsters Get the Blues: Sue G. Wilkinson Band at The Five Spot

Even Hipsters Get the Blues: Sue G. Wilkinson Band at The Five SpotBy Summer Stanley. Everybody knows you have to belt the blues. And when the lights grow dimmer, and the mood becomes softer, you have to croon them. Sue G. Wilkinson, along with her eight member band gets you high when you feel low, and when you’re low they get down with you.

A veteran musician, Sue G. Wilkinson tackles the keys at the Five Spot in a rousing performance, with a spunk equal to any barroom brawl. But the Five Spot is no saloon, and this band is far from dive-ey. Rather, they’re lively. When joined with the bass, guitar, drums, trumpet, saxophone, not to mention the diva-licious backup babes, The Sue G. Wilkinson Band is an experience in jumpin’ and jivin’.

Atlanta’s Favorite Hockey player

Atlanta's Favorite Hockey playerBy Jacqueline Bartelmo. The day before the Atlanta Thrashers made their first pick of 2001, a young Russian player declared his career goal “to be the greatest Russian hockey player ever.” Ilya Kovalchuk’s remark showed a great deal of confidence in himself. This assertiveness is what got the attention of the Atlanta Thrashers. Kovy, as he is known to Thrasher fans, is ranked 10th in the entire NHL; so far this season he has scored 15 goals and 10 assists in only 18 games. His average so far this season is 23.1%, meaning he scores nearly one of every four shots. The Thrashers’ captain is clearly proving himself as a key component to the team’s success.
