Thieves’ final performance and CD release party was at Kavarna Coffee Shop in Oakhurst [editor: area in Atlanta, GA] on Friday, January 15, 2009. The all-girl group, comprised of Jessie Calmes on vocals and guitar, Meta Gary on violin and vocals, Rene Lambert on bass and mandolin, and Khalilah Karim on backup vocals and accordion have come a long way to develop their sound of lilting, poetic folk. Directly after the post-show cigarette break, I gathered the band for some giggle-ridden girl talk, where they recalled their worst show ever, performing with the legendary Desk Ark, as well as a possible comeback.

Summer Stanley: Thieves, I was just ruminating on how it’s rather unusual to have a CD release party in conjunction with your final show, so to begin, is it really the final show?

Rene Lambert: So far.

Jessie Calmes: It was a publicity scam (Laughter). We’re gonna come out of retirement in a month.

Summer: Like Jay-Z?

Jessie: Like Jay-Z.

Summer: Well it did him a lot of good.

Jessie: We’re all gonna marry Beyonce too.

(The girl gaggle giggles)

Khalilah Karim: (Laughing) I think I’m already married to Beyonce. We have little Beyonces running around.

Summer: All right, well, the reason I ask is because I heard a little birdie mention that a French band contacted you through MySpace that wanted to tour with you. Care to comment?

Jessie: It’s possible that after some months we might come out with a bunch of different, new material and maybe a reincarnation.

Summer: OK. OK. So this would be like same people, different name and sound?

Jessie: Maybe.

Summer: Maybe?

Jessie: This is all hypothetical.

Summer: All right I’ll take hypothetical.

Meta Gary: I think we might just sing in French.

Summer: I’d pay to hear an American girl band sing French lyrics. Well kind of in a “looking back” vein, I know it’s pretty immediate, but how did Thieves originate and how long were you together for?

Rene: Originally we were all hanging out being sad and were like, “Hey, let’s make music.”

Jessie: It basically started with a different formation in the beginning, and we all were really bummed out about uh, ladies.

Summer: Mmm hmm.

Jessie: And so we literally just drank a lot of whiskey and wrote lots of songs really, really late at night.

Summer: Some of the best songs have been written that way.

Jessie: And then played them out of tune for the while.

Meta: Much to my dismay. I heard that there existed a group of really, really sad girls, and I was like, “I have got to get in on that.” And so I did. And uh, I brought ‘in tune’ with me.

Jessie: Meta made us tune our instruments.

Rene: She was like, “I can’t do this unless we tune!”

Jessie: And then we became “legit.”

Summer: Wow. When was it that you guys started playing shows regularly?

Jessie: Our first show was for Amy and Matteas’ benefit after their accident (scooter accident) two summers ago.

Summer: Yeah, that’s been a while. Well what bands have you guys been members of previous to Thieves?

Rene: The Bangers, Stanley’s Car – back in Louisiana.

Summer: Cool. What kind of a band was Stanley’s Car?

Rene: Ska.

Summer: So do you foresee yourself continuing as a musician after this?

Rene: Of course! Absolutely.

Summer: Do you have any upcoming projects at all?

Rene: Hopefully. I don’t know just yet.

Summer: But you will.

Rene: Yes. Of course.

Summer: (To Jessie) What about you?

Jessie: I did vocals for Bangers and now I’m in the Gazelles. I play drums.

Summer: Cool. I didn’t know you played drums. Who are The Gazelles? Are you performing around town now?

Jessie: We’ve been playing around Atlanta – I think we’re gonna book a show at Lenny’s soon. It’s kind of, I don’t even know, garage rock, 60’s girl groove. . .

Rene: Think Black Sabbath. It’s like old school metal. It’s awesome.

Jessie: Dirty.

Summer: I can’t wait! (To Khalilah) And what previous bands have you been in?

Khalilah: I was in a small band back in the early nineties, well it was kind of like mid-nineties, called Destiny’s Child.

(Laughter from everyone)

Khalilah: And um, I got kicked out because my dance moves were not up to par, but you know, I made it again with Thieves. So me and Beyonc’ are still close ‘cuz she’s having my babies.

Summer: I think you’re the only one who isn’t ill with her after she left Destiny’s Child to go solo.

Khalilah: (Laughing) You know, I’m OK as long as I get paid. You know they’re still using my lyrics.

Summer: (Laughing) Do your thing girl!

Khalilah: I’m a survivor (laughs). But whatever. But really, no. This is it.

Summer: No future projects?

Khalilah: Unless someone else wants me. Yeah, and if Thieves does a comeback tour…

Summer: Oh well I’ll miss you and I’m glad I got a lot of good pictures to memorialize this properly. (To Meta) And for you?

Meta: I was in one band in college – it was a math rock band.

Summer: A math rock band? What kind of band is that?

Meta: Um…

Jessie: It’s like math-y rock.

Summer: I’m sure it all adds up.

Meta: Good one. It’s like instrumental rock. . .

Summer: That sounds like genius rock!

Meta: I was in a genius rock band called Baracka.

Jessie: (In mock disbelief)It was called Baracka?

Kahlilah: Was it really? Baracka? Like the movie? (Laughs)

Meta: Yes it was. And it’s also a Mortal Combat character.

Summer: You are cool.

Meta: I always played music my whole life and I was in that band and then I kind of stopped for just being busy until I met these guys and I started…

Summer: And how did you guys meet?

Meta: (Gestures to front door of Kavarna) Out front right there.

Jessie: Yeah.

Meta: We were sitting at a table smoking cigarettes. . .

Jessie: And we were like “Oh, you play violin? And you look good?! OK.”

(Everyone laughs.)

Jessie: “Put on that hat!”

Meta: “Are you interested in being sad? Am I?!”

Khalilah: Any excuse to cry.

Summer: I really like that you guys were on the melancholy trip here. This is something that I didn’t know about you guys personally, but your music is very cathartic and haunting so I get it.

Jessie: At one point we actually covered Otis Redding’s “Sad Song.”

Summer: I wish I had heard that one! I also wish I had heard your famous cover of Mariah Carey’s “Shake it Off.”

Khalilah: A lot of people really wish they had heard “Shake it off.”

Rene: If we only knew everyone would chant. If we only had one more chance we could have prepared it.

Summer: Sorry, I kinda started the chanting. I didn’t realize. (To Meta) Well, do you have any musical projects on the horizons?

Meta: Not specifically, but yeah.

Summer: I get it. There will be. OK, well what else? Looking back, do you have a best/worst show moment? I’m gonna go one by one here, because this is gonna overwhelm my microphone, so Rene first.

Rene: Eddie’s attic is the show. (Everyone laughs.)

Summer: The best or the worst?

Rene: Um, the worst.

Summer: Tell me why.

Rene: Because everything was out of tune, and it was incredibly professional and we were not. And it was very embarrassing.

Summer: What was the crowd’s reaction?

Rene: They just sat there.

Jessie: One person said, “You know guys, you don’t have to play all your songs every time you play.”

Summer: Ouch.

Jessie: And I would agree. Horribly out-of-tune. Embarrassing.

Rene: We have a copy. You can hear it. It’s horrible.

Jessie: We like to listen to it for s…t and giggles.

Summer: Well, those days have come and gone and you guys have arrived at this point, but what was your best show moment?

Rene: Actually probably tonight.

Jessie: It was fun.

Summer: Yeah, it was a really fun night. It was great.

Rene: The crowd was really cool.

Summer: A lot of people showed up.

Rene: Yeah, I mean the whole environment was pretty, pretty right on man.

Summer: Yeah.

Jessie: I also think the best practice moment was today when we all sang Lady Gaga a capella to one another. I thought that sounded really, really good.

Summer: That’s pretty cool.

Jessie: Yeah definitely good use of our time before our last show.

Summer: Oh, definitely. And I’m sure there were, rather, I’m assuming, there were drinks.

Jessie: Yeah, well, I think there are anytime we do vocal exercises together too, which, involves Mariah Carey’s emotions.

Summer: Yes.

(The band starts doing their various Mariah Carey impressions.)

Jessie: Yeah, those are all good.

Summer: I love it! Khalilah, best/worst show moment?

Khalilah: I guess other than tonight I would have to say our first show in Athens that I played was a really good night.

Summer: Where did you guys play in Athens?

Khalilah: Little Kings.

Summer: That’s a fun place:

Khalilah: It was a really fun day. Good show, nice crowd, like I don’t actually know if the crowd was nice as in big, but the few people who were there were very nice.

Summer: They were like respectful and clapping at all the right times and everything. . .

Jessie: We played with The Shondas who were like a really big deal for us.

Summer: Oh cool. Tell me about The Shondas.

Jessie: They’re this, like- they were called the next “Sleater Kinney,” but they’re like this Jewish, rrriot girlish music.

Summer: Ooooh. That sounds really good.

Jessie: Queer. Really, really great violinist. And they were on the cover of Curve magazine the month before we booked the show. Louisa… that girl. So we played with them in Athens and in Atlanta. And that was cool

Summer: Cool. Besides The Shondas who were some of the most famous people that you performed with?

Jessie: Des Ark!

Rene: Yes!

Summer: (Enjoying the enthusiasm) Say it again!

Jessie: Desk Ark was my favorite show because I’ve been listening to Desk Ark since I was like 15.

Summer: I was at that show and it was astounding.

Rene: Wow. Yeah, it was incredible to meet Aimee.

(Aimee Argote, frontwoman for Desk Ark)

Jessie: Yeah.

Rene: She was uh, wow. Yeah. That was great.

Jessie: That was good. That had to be the best I think.

Summer: Yeah, yeah. That was at the Eyedrum. Thanks Marissa Overton for organizing that show! (To Meta) Best and worst for you?

Meta: Easily Eddie’s Attic. And a side note on the Eddie’s Attic show, I think I’d been playing with them for like three weeks at that time and uh, I had them, this was, I knew that they were out of tune, but I didn’t one hundred percent know how, how.

Jessie: Bad.

Meta: How bad the situation, how deep-rooted this problem was, and so in order to learn all the songs in time for the show because the shows was booked when I started playing with them, I had them record everything, and then I learned my parts, I made up parts according to recordings, and then uh, we were on stage playing and um, nothing! Nothing! Not a damn thing was in the same key.

(Everyone Laughter)

Summer: None of the instruments were tuned together at all?

Meta: No! So everyone that starts playing, and all these parts that I had, you know, studied …

Summer: Right.

Meta: And learned …

Jessie: (Laughing) In key?

Meta: … were all wrong. And it was absolutely horrible. And I was wearing this same hat, and I kept pulling it lower and lower during the course of the show, and lower past my face because I kept wanting to hide and I wondered multiple times how bad it would be if I just quietly stepped off the stage.

Summer: (Laughing) That’s great to admit that.

Meta: It was horrible. And the other side of that I would say is tonight, which is really ironic, because up until recording our CD, which went very quickly, we haven’t played in at least like a month or two.

Summer: I didn’t realize it had been that long.

Meta: So I wasn’t really foreseeing tonight going well, and I was kind of, I was nervous.

Jessie: I know and after that we stopped playing shows!

Meta: (Laughing) Done!

Meta: But yeah I don’t know what it was but tonight everything just felt like really solid, and the crowd was awesome.

Summer: Yeah.

Meta: Tonight was like a really good night. It was great. A great night to end on.

Summer: Absolutely.

Khalilah: Or to begin again on.

Summer: Don’t tease me!

Khalilah: Or to come back on! (Laughter)

Summer: That’s going to be the vein of my article, I want you to know that I’m going to paint you guys as a phoenix rising from the ash, so I’m editing it the way that I want it to be. (Laughter)

(Jessie starts doing the “Angels in the Outfield” flying motions. Everyone laughs.)

Summer: I just have to ask this one last question, out of personal curiosity, because I’m about to start learning the drums and I wanna know percentage-wise, how much more play I’m gonna get, than I have as a regular person now? And in addition to play specifically, what about perks of being in a band in general?

(Everyone shakes their head, laughs.)

Summer: (In disbelief) No perks! None whatsoever?!

Rene: Well, I mean, the connection you have with people when you play music it’s like family. That’s my favorite perk.

Summer: I feel that.

Rene: The intimacy with friends playing music … it’s pretty rad.

Summer: Totally.

Jessie: I would disagree.

(More laughter.)

Summer: Which part do you disagree with?

Jessie: Well, whenever we play I just crawl back into my anxiety hole, which involves me quickly loading instruments into the car and avoiding eye contact with anyone.

Rene: But we get to hang out with each other!

Jessie: No. But we’re talking about play.

Renee: Oh.

Jessie: No extra play.

Summer: No extra play at all?

Jessie: No.

Khalilah: I think that would only be lame when you’re like, “Yeah I play music and it’s blah blah blah blah.”

Jessie: Yeah, that’s nice, but no, never after a show have I been like “Hey girl how you doin’?” It’s more like (nervously giggles, voice shaking): “Hi- thank you ha ha.”

(We all laugh.)

Summer: Yeah, you’re just like, “OK, get me outta here.”

Jessie: Well Khalilah gets all the honeys.

Khalilah: I mean since I’ve been in this band, guys, oh my god. (Laughs) I can’t count the amount of a.. I’ve got!

Meta: She can’t count the amounts.

Khalilah: Yeah.

Summer: OK, well I’m always curious about the dating life of a musician. Are there any other perks?

Khalilah: Yeah – stage fright.

Summer: I never would’ve thought any of you had stage fright. It’s interesting talking to you about that, because it’s new information to me.

Jessie: I puke either before or after any first performance I’ve had with a band.

Summer: Wow. I would too. I was at a show in New York – I went to go see Atmosphere, and Slug has super-fan karaoke before the show where he serves at the hype man, but the fans have to rap his songs onstage without any lyrics. The participants just have to know it by heart. And when Slug was introducing them, he said “You guys need to be nice to these people because before I go on for every show, I have to sh… . Literally. And I wrote the songs.” Sooooo. . . I get that.

Summer: (To Meta) So perks for you?

Meta: Um, we usually get a tab.

(Everyone): Yeah.

Summer: Well that is a definite perk.

Khalilah: (To Meta) You get to show your artwork! But I think we played because of your artwork.

Meta: I think what that is, is I get to deflect attention away from myself.

Rene: No! From your artwork?

Meta: Yeah. And turn it into a band show instead of an art show which is much more comfortable.

Summer: I had no idea this was a combination art show and band show.

Meta: See? (Gesturing to a flock of bird paintings on the wall).

Summer: Oh!

Jessie: It’s called Flock by Artist Meta Gary.

Summer: I’m so glad I know that now! Do you have a website?

Meta: There’s a MetaGary.com website.

Summer: Great! And what sorts of art do you do?

Meta: I’m a painter. I’m currently in grad school for graphic design.

Summer: Great! Well I’m so glad to know that extra little ditty. Any last words before I shut off my recorder?

Jessie: OK. OK.

Rene: (short un-transcribable).

Jessie: (High-pitched Mariah Carey-esque squeal)

Khalilah: (Imitating Lady Gaga) Pa-pa-razzi!

Meta: I don’t have any last words.

Summer: OK.

Meta: That’s kind of ironic.

Jessie: This was kind of fun.

Summer: Isn’t it fun?

Everybody knows you have to belt the blues. And when the lights grow dimmer, and the mood becomes softer, you have to croon them. Sue G. Wilkinson, along with her eight member band gets you high when you feel low, and when you’re low they get down with you.

A veteran musician, Sue G. Wilkinson tackles the keys at the Five Spot in a rousing performance, with a spunk equal to any barroom brawl. But the Five Spot is no saloon, and this band is far from dive-ey. Rather, they’re lively. When joined with the bass, guitar, drums, trumpet, saxophone, not to mention the diva-licious backup babes, The Sue G. Wilkinson Band is an experience in jumpin’ and jivin’.

Sue G.’s vocals are as uninhibited as the classic Janis Joplin with the higher, uproarious melody of the more modern Duffy. The song “Bitter Girl” evokes the 70’s during the era of Laura Nyro’s “Stoned Soul Picnic.”

With their swaying hips and lustrous harmonies, the backup singers, Rachel Nussbaum and Linda Jackson bring R&B, Funk and Fusion themes, and positively seduce with the song “Hold My Heart.” Johnny Hibbert on sax and Miko (just Miko) on the trumpet, alongside Reese Harris on the drums summon the ghosts of the Big Easy with their New Orleans Brass style in “Work it out.”

The SGW Band brings the house down with “Big Black Woman,” wild and titillating as the after-church-basement-boogie-blues. Lee Spivey on guitar and Mike Cady on bass both deliver a heavy dose of rockin’ blue-eyed soul.

It seems apt that SGW Band boldly traverses genres in a venue such as the Five Spot, a bar that is also in the business of uniting different elements. The Five Spot pairs fine beers as well as a full bar with local art displays and live entertainment, performed on a stage backed by a giant movie projector for an engaging artistic experience.

The band attracts crowd of all ages, mostly hip with a significant number of admiring fellow musicians, and left standing room only to see The SGW band even though the performance fell in the midst of an ice storm. But once The Sue G. Wilkinson Band takes the stage, they light a fire. And it is hot!

The Sue G. Wilkinson Band’s performs next at Shorty’s on February 19th. Bring your stomping shoes!

Don’t let the title of this one fool you. He does do weddings, he is all Greek, but the man is definitely easy on the eyes! Constantine Varazo is a triple threat working the Atlanta entertainment circuit. An accomplished actor, model, and singer, Varazo relocated to our city from Pensacola, Florida in 2002 to polish his acting focus. However, he came to find himself submerged in this city’s popular independent music scene. Now, he is a commanding force on the small stage. I took in an open mic night hosted by the singer at a relaxed bar and lounge located in the heart of downtown on Peachtree Street. I left that evening satisfied by the live sets, but more so, surprised when I discovered that the musician picked up the guitar merely one year ago, and plays a bluesy harmonica, to boot.

Constantine performs a blend of top 40, Motown and classic rock covers, and accompanied on acoustic guitar by the very talented Rob Grater, the pair have a unique way of making the song’s “their own”. I was especially impressed with a version of Gnarls Barkley, “Crazy”, in which the use of a dropped tempo, along with the acoustic accompaniment, gave a haunting nuance to the familiar hit. A cover of U2’s, “One”, also went over well with me, as it is one of my personal favorites. The great thing about an open mic night is that it displays an array of other musical talents from around the metro area. That particular evening showcased an amazing mandolin player, an acoustic bass and guitar duo, and a young guitar and keyboard combo. Therefore, this is a call to all aspiring Atlanta musicians to check out Constantine’s open mic and show your skills, every Tuesday night from 8:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. at Barley’s, which is located at 338 Peachtree Street, Atlanta 30309.

Varazo puts his musical stamp on other venues across the city, as well. In a show designed for customized corporate entertainment, i.e. Christmas parties, Constantine and his band 5th Element put on a rock history tribute, complete with costume changes. The performance highlights rock n’ roll’s progression, from the era of the Beatles, Elvis, and Little Richard up through current acts, like the Foo Fighters and U2. This blend of acting and musical performance is a rare treat to see outside of the Fox Theater. During our interview, Constantine sweetly reminded me, “My goal in music is to have fun and entertain the audience, not to promote my own agenda of stardom.” Upon hearing this humble side of the artist, it came as no surprise for me to learn that he got his start singing in his family’s church choir.

Finding Mr. Varazo’s displays of talent around town is not difficult. He is constantly finding new gigs and auditions, an entertainer for hire, so to speak. You can catch an early showing of his acoustic duo at St. Angelo’s Pizza off of South Atlanta Road in Smyrna on December 27th from 5:30 to 8:30. To find further info, future performance dates, or if you’re just in need of a band to play your wedding, then look him up at constantinevarazo.com or 5thelemententertainment.com.

There is a new kind of music seeping into the streets of Atlanta. It is new, but familiar. It is simultaneously rebellious, emotional, and sexual; something that grabs onto your collar, pulling you into what feels like a music video and leaving you wanting more.

It comes from an Atlanta based, unsigned, 4-piece band named FishHawk. The music created by this band is reminiscent of 80′s synthpop, with electro beats and vocals that reach notes that most bands cannot. When I hear their music, I think of an abstract painting. The strokes of the brush are a random compilation of colors and textures. When done correctly it elicits emotions unique to the listener – no two people will interpret this music in the same way.

…simultaneously rebellious, emotional, and sexual…

I was able to see them perform live at The Star Community Bar – and they exceeded my expectations. The live performance is by far the best thing they offer. A close second would be the recorded tracks available on their two albums.

The music was loud, rough and dripping wet from the intensity that is usually only found from more seasoned professionals. FishHawk provided everything you could want in a live show, plus a bit of comedy which came as they dedicated a song to H1N1. Very original.

Each member of this band brings something important to the table. Andy Slagle and Nick Nickerson are the two original members- creating the first album. Andy handles production and plays the guitar, with Nick as the lead vocalist and writer. They later added Matt Williams to the group, who also works in production and during the live performance was on both the guitar and keyboard. Most recently added member is Ryan Ross, who is the drummer of Teddy and the Bears. When they come together, the show is powerful.

I spent the past week familiarizing myself with the music of this band. If you don’t get the chance to listen to all the songs – let me recommend two songs from each of the albums that will provide you with an overview of what you will find.

On the self-titled first album I recommend the song ‘Corner Store’. It is an interesting mix of acoustic and electronica, adding a tinge of Spanish influences in the background at around 45 seconds. Secondly check out ‘Go Heels Boy’, later being remixed into ‘Go Heels Dance Meoff Mix’. Both are dance songs that will get your feet moving in the “right direction”.

The second album, Bells Underwater, can be summarized with the song ‘Shake Your Dime’. The vibe is more hardcore rock, which you will see more of in this album. It is a great illustration of what the music sounds like during the live performance. Also on the second album is ‘Into the Sunset’ which is my favorite from both albums. It has an emotional edginess with a contagious beat. It is a prime example of the vocal aptitude of Nick Nickerson.

The first album is volatile and dark. There are many similarities between the style of this album and the popular Nine Inch Nails song ‘Closer’ which many argue was their most famous song. The second album brought some additional production value that I believe they needed. Beats are a little faster, similar to the bands MGMT and Phoenix , with a style that is more retro.
If you are ready to get a taste of what FishHawk has to offer, then check out their website at www.fishhawkmusic.com. Here you can listen to some of their best songs, free of charge. Also look for their upcoming shows so you can go out and support this local band. You won’t regret it.

Trust me, 5 out of 5 doctors recommend FishHawk to help liven up that boring play list you have had on repeat. They will get you on your feet and moving in no time!

529 in East Atlanta hosted our own Subsonics last Saturday. I’d been personally counting down the days until this show when I found out it was happening. Subsonics seem to have been playing in Atlanta for an eternity, their first release dating back to a seven inch from back in 1993. Clay Reed, brains behind the outfit, has been romping around Atlanta, spitting out twangy surf punk on vinyl ever since compact discs were the cutting edge.

This guy’s durability alone is enough to make the Subsonics worthy of recognition. The fact that he’s downright cool, sporting a look and attitude that could brand him a title such as Atlanta’s Iggy Pop doesn’t hurt him either, so seeing them play is not only like witnessing a little snippet of Atlanta history, it’s a great way to spend a night snapping fingers and shaking shoulders. These guys rarely play out at all anymore, making this show all the more anticipated. The Subsonics don’t have much of a reputation for playing many shows, though. In fact the Subsonics’ main criticism is their lack of touring. Many fans of the group will tell you that the band could have really taken off with some more time on the road, but are the Subsonics a case of a missed opportunity? Well, in the eyes of an Atlantan such as myself, I say that’s not the case at all. The band has stayed true to its stomping grounds, and there’s nothing wrong with that, but maybe I’m just being possessive.

Also on the bill on Saturday, and excitedly so, were Atlanta newbies (compared to Reed’s veterans) The North Trolls, and Balkans. The North Trolls were admittedly psyched to be involved in the occasion. For them, the excitement for the night’s show began immediately after showing up, when they learned that the Balkans were all under-age, earning the rest of the bands more drink tickets, as the young Balkans would not be allowed to consume alcohol. Excellent.

After the North Trolls’ quick set of fast, southern style pop punk, the Balkans took the stage. Young age is not taken into consideration in this case. These guys play a low-fi style of hyper rock-n-roll, the singer’s Strokes-like voice putting them in the same category of a band like The Walkmen. It’s impressive.

And so then came the Subsonics, playing their music for a crowd mostly half their age, for musicians and fans who are being passed the torch lit by the band on stage. There was a feeling of respect in the room, made obvious when alluring Buffi Aguero (who plays drums standing up) asked if someone would bring her a vodka tonic, and multiple men handed her her drinks just moments later.

Needless to say the show was a success. Having moved to Atlanta only nine years ago, when Subsonics had already been around for a long, long time, I consider myself lucky to have been able to see them still. I recommend that we all look into the good music coming from Balkans and The North Trolls soon, as it shouldn’t be expected for many other bands to last as long as Subsonics have.

By Gus Fernandez.

I woke up last week in a hurry, late for class. In a hasty search for my keys in the living room I found a stranger on my couch, just stirring from a night’s rest. One good-morning- nod later, I had moved my search into the kitchen, where another stranger was rolling up her sleeping bag. I had to wait to brush my teeth too, because someone was in my bathroom.

As it turns out, Yussuf Jerusalem, a band of which one of my roommates must be a fan, had found a place to crash in the comfort of my house. When I attempted a quick conversation before running out the door, I was surprised to learn that neither of them spoke much English at all. As it turns out, Yussuf Jerusalem is from France and they’ve booked themselves a three-month-long tour of the States.

This isn’t necessarily about Yussuf Jerusalem, but about a time and a place where creative minds are finding a way to make progress in the world of music, where anyone can make music and play it all over the globe. And they’re doing it. In a time where becoming successful in the music industry is just as common as moving up the ladder from janitor to CEO, there are those who do it because they love it and they see the answer to the question, “how can we do what we love all the time?” in doing it themselves.

DIY ethics are not a fresh way of thinking. In fact, doing it yourself has been a popular approach in music almost as long as there has been such a thing as music scenes. It just happens to work nicely with throwback garage rock bands working hard all over the world. Some could say that the Black Lips, Atlanta’s first born pride and joy of garage rock set the standard for re-applying DIY ethics to the growing garage scene in the 21’st century. Assigning instruments not based on who plays what the best, but randomly, eliminates any necessity for talent. Drummer Joe Bradley of the Black Lips once told me, “I’m just a drummer by default”. Access to the Internet, basements, and dive bars eliminates any need for booking agents and the like. All it takes is a creative brain and some iron work ethic. On this foundation, an empire is being created. Independent record labels who release strictly vinyl, distributing home-made, low-fi recordings that sound just like the sixties are popping up, among them Atlanta based Douchemaster and Die Slaughterhaus records.

You see, these kids have found solace in simplicity. While executives in the music industry are deciding what the next phase in the world of music will be, bands like Yussuf Jerusalem are moving forward by looking backward, towards a simpler time, a funner music. Shows at lower capacity venues are being easily filled. The distance between crowds and bands is slashed and nearly eliminated and the intimacy of sharing the energy produced by good songs is contagious.

Atlanta is teeming with this very energy as home of so many artists who will make an imprint on modern day music. Among these artists, Gentleman Jesse and his Men, who play a style of power-pop reminiscent of frontrunners, The Nerves or Ramones. Also The Carbonas, The Lids, Subsonics. These young enthusiasts have made such an impact that they’ve been able to bring to us quality concerts from their idols and frontrunners from the 60’s and 70’s. Paul Collins, lead-man for The Nerves who were tour mates with the Ramones and are responsible for their hit, Hangin’ On The Telephone (made popular by Blondie’s cover) at The Earl. Wreckless Eric, a great influence to Gentleman Jesse, at the Star Bar, a ‘Douchemaster Presents’ event. New fans and old came together to remember or to be introduced to what is the grass roots movement of modern day music.

Bands like the Black Lips who started out eating out of dumpsters while on the road can now say they’ve played to giant crowds at massive music festivals as far as Spain, sharing the same stage as goliaths of music such as Kings of Leon or Coldplay. Yussuf Jerusalem have no reason not to travel to the U.S for shows without an idea of where to sleep at night. There’s nothing to discourage them.

One thing that the language barrier between my houseguests and I couldn’t hold back was their obvious excitement to be seeing the world the way they want to, playing music. Atlantans should be proud to harbor and perpetuate these valiant creatives and the idea that if one wants something, it can be achieved.

Two of the world's greatest musicians, songwriters and entertainers are back on tour! Elton John & Billy Joel's Face 2 Face tour, named the most successful and longest-running concert pairing in pop history, is reuniting this March for a series of shows through 2009 and 2010.

The two piano men first toured together in 1994, and then again in 2003, where they saw a string of 24-dates sell out immediately. With a mutual admiration for each other, it's clear to see why these two legends are able to share the stage.

Two of the world’s greatest musicians, songwriters and entertainers are back on tour! Elton John & Billy Joel’s Face 2 Face tour, named the most successful and longest-running concert pairing in pop history, is reuniting this March for a series of shows through 2009 and 2010.

The two piano men first toured together in 1994, and then again in 2003, where they saw a string of 24-dates sell out immediately. With a mutual admiration for each other, it’s clear to see why these two legends are able to share the stage.

John is quoted as saying, “I love touring with Billy. I have the greatest respect for him and we’re such good friends,” while Joel has declared, “The great thing about performing with Elton is that he is such a good piano player and that makes me have to dig deep to keep up with him, not to mention I’ve got the best seat in the house-only one piano away from Elton John!”

John and Joel are set to open the concerts with a series of duets, playing twin pianos and sharing vocal duties before each artist takes to the stage with their own band to perform their individual sets. Then, in true showmanship fashion, the two legends return to the stage together for a grand finale encore. With a set list made up of both of the artists’ greatest hits and rock n’ roll classics, this is a concert sure to delight any music lover!

The Face 2 Face tour will crisscross North America off-and-on as John finishes his hit show, The Red Piano, at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas in April. More 2009 dates are still to be announced, along with international dates for 2010.

When one thinks of city life, local festivals may not be the first things that come to mind. However, Atlanta is full of local community festivals and events that provide cultural and educational opportunities as well as inexpensive entertainment options for all ages

With its diverse population and multinational residents, Atlanta abounds with cultural festivals. Festival Peachtree Latino draws large crowds and great musical performances to Underground Atlanta. JapanFest is the largest Japanese Festival in the Southeast and draws crowds upwards of 18,000. And the Atlanta Asian Film Festival combines multi-national works of art with an incomparable educational experience. The Atlanta Greek Festival provides attendees delicious samples of authentic Greek fare along with traditional music and dance.

Community festivals that support local nonprofit organizations and historical societies often combine local artists to provide a full day, or two, of shopping, eating and musical entertainment. The Sandy Springs festival hosted each fall includes a concert in the square, a 10k run, a home tour and plenty of local arts and crafts. The Inman Park festival and home tour held each April is considered Atlanta’s biggest street market and hosts the city’s quirkiest and most colorful parade. The Dogwood Festival hosted each spring in Piedmont Park is the area’s largest artistic festival combining incomparable musical performances with an artist market and special children’s events to draw hundreds of thousands of festival goers annually.

While many festivals celebrate a particular culture or local community life and encompass a number of artistic elements, some festivals focus on a specific art. The Atlanta Jazz Festival provides residents and visitors the chance to hear legendary as well as local musicians while also learning about the history of the genre. The Georgia Shakespeare Festival is held annually at Oglethorpe College to celebrate the theatrical works of art written by William Shakespeare.

And while many festivals may last only one or two days, some encompass ongoing events and educational opportunities throughout the year. The National Black Arts Festival celebrates the life and contributions of people of African descent and their impact on world cultures through year-round educational programs and special events.
